Why I Am A Librarian

On November 10, 2010, I gave this presentation for the graduate students enrolled in the Library Information Media Studies program at Chicago State University. It was really fun and I thought I would share this with all of you. Until next time, K.C.

  1. Great presentation - I think that we truly need a functional library in every public school.

  2. Without the CPS teacher-librarians, 100,000 students WOULD NOT have received critical financial literacy education last year. 197 librarians answered the call and volunteered to learn and teach their students in K-8 about the choices they have for money, how to set goals for those choices and ultimately, how to delay gratification.

Librarians taught students critical life skills that not only helped them as individuals, but helped the families they took this education home to which in turn helps the communities these families live in and society overall.

  3. I loved the presentation. The importance of librarians can not be stressed enough. Our kids need physical libraries and the guidance of librarians in their lives. CPS has to recognize that fact and fight for the students' education on every level. My love of books, of walking around a library, of harassing librarians for more, more, more information, shaped my life. Books allowed me to dream and as an adult, make those dreams come true.

  4. KC I can't say enough good things about your communication skills. We librarians have to understand how important what we do is and try to communicate it to others. It gets frustrating that what is obvious to us is so fuzzy to other people but maybe it's partly because people have preconceived notions of what a library and a librarian are. For some this means they are predisposed to be positive about the library. These people are the easy ones for us to work with, but also can be our ambassadors. It would be so sad and wrong if libraries were allowed to fall by the wayside because some people don't value them.

  5. KC, I tweeted your presentation and I said, "NUF SAID." Your presentation is an excellent expose of the value of our profession for children, and for readers and writers of every community. Any educator and/or administrator who doesn't "get" the urgency of reading and its impacts on people's lives ... well ... 'nuf said.

  6. I appreciate all you're doing to educate people about the situation many of us school library media specialists face. Our job is so multi-faceted, but as your presentation indicated, getting literature into the hands of teens is one of the main aspects of it--and one of its greatest joys!! Thank you for bringing these issues to light.

  7. I love the word "connect" to describe what librarians do. We connect people with resources, stories, experiences, other people... your enthusiasm and caring shines through in this presentation. Love it.
