One of my biggest pet peeves is attending literature seminars/conferences where the presenters fail to include multi-cultural material. (I'm going to remain positive, so I will not name some of these presenters that annoy me.) Yesterday I attended a BER – Bureau of Education and Research session called, “The Best Young Adult Books of the Decade and How to Use Them in Your Program.” The session was presented children’s literature expert, Dr. Denni Kay Scates.
Let me just say her presentation was great! Denni shared creative ideas on how librarians can use books in their library programs effectively! If you have the opportunity to attend one of her sessions, you will definitely be in for a treat. I was also really pleased to see a couple of titles in her presentation that I often recommend to librarians. These books are 'alternate' choices for teens that crave the adult Urban Fiction books.
Her website, http://www.guidedteaching.com/ has a wealth of resources that librarians, reading specialists and teachers can use. I believe once you evaluate the site, you will either bookmark it or save it to your Delicious account.
