Get a Jump on Your Spring and Summer Reading Lists!

If you can, check out the next School Library Journal webcast on February 25, 2010, 2pm to 3pm eastern standard time.  Brie Edmonds Ashton, Harlequin Marketing Manager will be one of the panelist that will discuss the newest and hottest books for young adult readers.  The webcast is free and interested librarians, teachers and parents can register for this event at: School Library Journal Webcast

I attended the first webcast a couple of months ago and enjoyed the presentation by Kimani Tru's Glenda Howard, Executive Editor.  I really enjoy reading the Kimani Tru books because young African-American readers can relate to the real-life situations that are described in each story.  The books aren't too preachy or naive but instead are cautionary tales that teens today need.

If you cannot attend this live event, School Library Journal archives their webcasts for 1 calendar year.

Rock for Reading

Just had to share the good news!

Rock for Reading a non-for-profit agency in Chicago that donates thousands of books to deserving students throughout the Chicagoland area. Over the Christmas Holidays, Rock for Reading partnered with Borders Bookstore and raised money for a book drive that supplied children with books for their school library and personal libraries at home. The organization has also reached a milestone by donating their 500,000th book to a school library. The Bennett Elementary School Library was the recipient of this honor! The link below will guide you to a short youtube.com video presentation that features Bennett Elementary School students, Librarian, Rozetta Toney, Principal Barbara Ellis and Assistant Principal Roberta Fields.

Many thanks to Rock for Reading for providing much needed books for students within the Chicago Public School System! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOc37pltHWA
